St. Paul Saints News Release
FARGO, ND (May 4, 2009) - Scouts began salivating over Tanner Scheppers long before he took the mound for the St. Paul Saints on Monday night against the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks. He had them all drooling after his impressive debut as the St. Paul Saints defeated the Redhawks 7-1 on Monday night at Newman Outdoor Field in front of 1,964.
The second round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2008 June Amateur draft tossed 4.0 hitless innings walking four and striking out six. Scheppers struck out the side in the first while walking one batter.
In the second he walked the lead off man, got a double play ground out and then walked the third hitter of the inning. He ended the inning with his fourth strike out of the night.
Scheppers would strike out his final two of the night in the third and got his second double play grounder to end the fourth inning and his evening.
Not to be outdone was Adam Cox, whom the Saints got in a trade with the Atlantic City Surf at the end of last season. He hurled 3.0 innings allowing an unearned run on three hits while walking one and striking out one.
The Saints took a 2-0 lead in the second, a lead they would never relinquish. Three consecutive singles by Jacob Butler, Ole Sheldon and Tony Mansolino, the latter plating a run, gave the Saints a 1-0 lead. A sacrifice fly by Daron Roberts later in the inning gave the Saints their second run.
With the Saints leading 3-0 in the seventh Ron Fenwick singled and scored on Craig Brazell's triple. He later scored on a throwing error when Jacob Butler's grounder was thrown away by the shortstop to take a 5-1 lead
Jacob Butler doubled home two runs in the ninth to finish the scoring. He was one of three Saints to collect two hits, along with Brazell and Brent Krause, going 2-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Mansolino finished the night 3-5 with an RBI.
The Saints will work out at Midway Stadium on Tuesday and Wednesday and play their first home exhibition game on Thursday night with a 7:05 p.m. contest against the Gary SouthShore RailCats at Midway Stadium.
