Grand Rapids Hoops News Release
Alex Scales set a CBA season-high with 52 points in leading the Grand Rapids HOOPS to a convincing 141-125 victory over the Rockford Lightning Sunday afternoon at the DeltaPlex Arena. Scales (17-28 FG) finished strong, scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter as Grand Rapids took five of seven quarter points from the conference-leading Lightning.
The Lightning made a small run to finish up the fourth quarter to make the score respectable, but the story of the night was the HOOPS offense.
The team set a franchise record with 48 assists on 52 made field goals. The total, which was also a league high, was the HOOPS highest total since they compiled 39 against Columbus on February 3, 1991. Grand Rapids also shot a red-hot 52-85 (.612) from the field in the game.
Grand Rapids (16-17) defeated the Lightning for the first time in six meetings, as Jerald Honeycutt and Chris Bacon added 19 and 16 points, respectively. Jack Hartman also came off the bench to contribute 13 points and a game-high ten rebounds.
The victory was the third in a row for Grand Rapids, and solidified their second-place standing in the American Conference.
Rockford (21-12) was led in scoring by Michigan-native Albert White, who registered 37 points (15-28 FG), and Ronnie Fields, who added 28 points. After losing the first quarter 39-31, the HOOPS awoke to take advantage of a lackluster Rockford squad, building a their lead to as many as 24 points at one point.
The HOOPS take the show on the road as they travel to face the Great Lakes Storm on Wednesday night at the Birch Run Expo Center.
