Saugerties Stops Mohawk Valley Comeback in 9th, Dawgs Lose 8-4

July 15, 2021 - Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL)
Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs News Release

LITTLE FALLS, NY The Saugerties Stallions took a 1-hitter into the eighth, but they needed to stop a massive Mohawk Valley comeback to hold on to the 8-4 victory.

The Stallions got on the board quickly after back-to-back walks to start the game, as a throwing error would score Josh Stevenson (Youngsville, LA/Louisiana State). They'd add another on an RBI single by Max Morris (Woodbury, MN/) in the second, scoring Jarrett Brown (Savannah, GA/Georgia Southern).

Saugerties extended the lead to three on a sacrifice fly to center field by Noah Berghammer (Janesville, WI/Minnesota), scoring Morris. Stevenson would also score one batter later on an RBI single by Tyler Kelder (Kingston, NY/Florida Atlantic). They'd add another two in the sixth on a 2-RBI single by Kip Fougerousse (Linton, IN/Indiana).

Brown would add a seventh run in the seventh on an RBI single that scored Jack Renwick (Spartanburg, SC/Wofford). Another Stallion run would come the same way in the eighth thanks to Fougerousse, scoring Kelder.

Matt Venuto (Mansfield, MA/Fairfield) finally broke up the shutout in the eighth on an RBI double that scored Chris Peralta (Lynbrook, NY/Molloy). Rob Taylor (Wolcott, CT/New Haven) cut the lead to six on a passed ball by Saugerties reliever Rey Rodriguez (Hesperia, CA/Webber).

Mohawk Valley got a walk from Taylor with the bases loaded to cut the lead to five, scoring Cedric Rose (Pittsfield, MA/UMass Lowell). Jake Barbiere (Randolph, NJ/Rider) would bring a run home in much the same way -- getting hit this time to score Vincenzo Castronovo (Utica, NY/Bryant). That would be all Jarek Woodward (Seattle, WA/Grand Canyon) would give up, getting the next two out after another Castronovo's run to close out the game.

Andres Auffant (Center Moriches, NY/Franklin Pierce) got the win for Saugerties (21-9), while Woodward picked up the save. Andy Grygorcewicz (Northampton, MA/Saint Anselm) was saddled with the loss for Mohawk Valley (14-16).

The Diamond Dawgs are back on the road on Friday evening as they finish out their Patriot's Bank Rivalry series with the Amsterdam Mohawks at Shuttleworth Park. They will be back at Veteran's Memorial Park for the start of a weekend home stand on Saturday to face the Watertown Rapids. Saugerties continues their road trip on Friday with a visit to Keenholts Park for a doubleheader with the Albany Dutchmen before heading back to Cantine Field on Saturday to host the Glens Falls Dragons.
