Chicago Stars FC News Release
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Chicago Red Stars of Women's Professional Soccer officially were eliminated from the WPS playoff picture Saturday when the Washington Freedom came from behind and defeated New Jersey-based Sky Blue FC, 2-1.
The Red Stars needed the two teams to play to a draw in order to mathematically stay in the race. But with Washington winning, the Freedom currently are hanging onto the fourth and final postseason slot with a 7-8-7 record and 28 points, followed by Sky Blue (7-10-4, 25 points) and the sixth-place Red Stars (5-11-6, 21 points).
Though the Red Stars are out of the postseason race, Chicago is looking to finish the season strong as the team gears up for two remaining regular-season home matches at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill. The Red Stars host the Philadelphia Independence at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, then host Washington at 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, with the match televised on Fox Soccer Channel.
Red Stars Kids Club members can attend the Sept. 1 or 5 match for only $5 as part of the team's Kids Club Days.
The Red Stars and 3M Clean Water Solutions are teaming up for the Ultimate Fan Experience for the Sept. 5 game. Four lucky winners will receive a VIP tour of Toyota Park, attend the match next to the Red Stars home bench and listen in on the post-game press conference in the Media Room. Red Stars season ticket holders automatically are entered.
