Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Vero Beach, FL) - The Sarasota Reds rolled over the Vero Beach Dodgers 9-2 Thursday night at Holman Stadium. Blake DeWitt went 3-5 with a home run in the loss for Vero Beach, who lost their fifth straight game. The series continues with Servie Chevrolet Night Friday at 7:00 PM.

Sarasota scored early and often against Cory Wade (0-2) in the first two innings. To lead off the game Cody Strait popped up a fly ball to left that was dropped and put Strait at second base.

Following a sacrifice bunt, Tonys Gutierrez walked and Jeremiah Piepkorn was hit by a pitch. Jay Garthwaite doubled to score two runs and a ground out brought in another for a 3-0 Sarasota lead.

DeWitt's home run came in the bottom of the first, but the Reds answered in the second. Strait was hit by a pitch and stole second. Paul Janish singled him in and then later scored on Piepkorn's base hit for a 5-1 lead.

Wade then settled down and retired 16 of the next 17 Reds. The Dodgers were unable to regain the momentum, however. The only other run Vero Beach scored came in the fourth when David Nicholson trotted home on a wild pitch from starter Ramon Ramirez (4-4). The Dodgers would leave at least one man on base in every inning.

Sarasota began to pull away in the late innings. Piepkorn homered in the seventh for the final run off Wade, who pitched 7 complete innings for the second time in his three FSL starts. Cody Strait singled in another run in the 8th and Brent Leach issued a wild pitch to plate Marland Williams in the same inning. Chris Kroski then smacked his 2nd home run of the season in the 9th to seal the 9-2 victory.
