With all the figures that led them to their respective championships, the Mexican soccer champions Santos Laguna of the First Division and AC Leon, recently promoted to top Aztec circuit, will meet on Sunday July 8th at the Home Depot Center for the Champion of Champions Cup.
The international game, presented by the Los Angeles Blues Soccer Club is scheduled for 5:00 pm, Pacific Time.
With an effective football, shown throughout the 17 game schedule of the Mexican championship, Santos Laguna finished the regular season with 36 points emerged from 11 wins, three defeats and three draws and then, putting aside the so-called "curse of the super leader", won his fourth title of the Mexican Soccer League by defeating Monterrey 2-1 (global 3-2)), in an intense final leg of the Clausura 2012 Championship, held at the Estadio Corona TSM.
With this, the victory, the "Warriors", broke a run of 3 defeats in the Mexican soccer finals, equating Monterrey as the sixth most successful teams in football in that country.
It was also the first championship as Head Coach for "The Maestro" Benjamin Galindo.
In this Clausura 2012, Leon remained unbeaten throughout a regular championship, reached the playoffs as absolute leader and reached the league title, with their only loss the year in the first leg of the final against Correcaminos UAT.
With Gustavo Matosas at the helm, Leon fell 2-1 in the away game before the Tamaulipas crowd, but in the return match, held at the Nou Camp, Leon earned their place in the Mexican top flight football with a resounding 5 -0 victory. For the popular and historic Bajio team, it was their fourth ascent berth and the first successful try over a period of ten years.
Santos Laguna, has a roster full of stars, led by Tri idol, Chivas de Guadalajara and "Warriors", Oswaldo Sanchez, goalkeeper for the Mexican National Team in the FIFA 2006 World Cup.
Sanchez will be joined in Los Angeles with a top international group of stars that includes, Colombian Carlos Quintero, as well as other Mexican National Team members, Aaron Galindo and the new figure of Mexican soccer, Oribe Peralta; Christian Suarez (Ecuador), Felipe Baloy (Panama) United States' Herculez Gomez and Argentinian Daniel Luduena an attacking midfielder, who has averaged nearly a goal every three games in over 200 appearances for the club.
Meanwhile, to further strengthen the successful franchise, newly promoted Leon Club made major acquisitions in the transfer market. The five-time national champions have obtained Mexican National Team star Jonny Magallon from Chivas and Edgar Pacheco. The couple joins a team that also features former Tri star, Duilio Davino, who had a season with FC Dallas Major League Soccer in 2008 and whose recent signing adds the experience of over 80 caps with the national team.
Also on the list of Club LeÃ"n are other former international players: Fernando Salazar and keeper Christian Martinez, striker Othoniel Arce and the Mexican American defender, Marco Vidal, who was born in Dallas, Texas.
Currently, a team is negotiating for another high-profile player: Matias Britos, Uruguayan striker, born in San Carlos, who omes from Defensor Sporting. He is currently making arrangements to travel to Mexico to officially sign with the Esmeraldas and should be part of the team in its presentation against Santos Laguna at Home Depot.
