Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN, MS – The two-time defending CHL champion Memphis RiverKings came up short and now confront dwindling playoff hopes due to a 1-0 whitewashing by the Indianapolis Ice in front of a DeSoto Civic Center crowd 6430.

Jason Baird picked up the only goal of the contest at the 14:24 mark of the 1st period. Baird pounced on a loose puck in the ‘Kings zone to force a 3 on 1 break before slotting home his 27th of the season.

The game saw excellent efforts by both teams' penalty kill units. Indianapolis failed to extend the lead despite being given a 5 minute power play after the ‘Kings took a slashing major. Memphis threatened to draw level but could not capitalize on a 5 on 3 advantage in the third period.

In the final analysis, the night belonged to Indianapolis goaltender Jeff Sanger who turned aside 40 RiverKings shots for his 20th win this year.

At the other end of the ice, ‘Kings goaltender Jean-Francois Racine stopped 34 of the 35 shots he faced to pick up the loss.

The loss upgrades tomorrow's contest against Tulsa from merely serious to absolutely crucial. Combined with a Wichita win in Bossier-Shreveport the loss drops the ‘Kings 2 points back of the Thunder. Memphis needs a win tomorrow night as well as a Wichita loss in order to reach the Central Hockey League playoffs. The puck is schedule to drop at 3:00 pm CST.

With the win, Indianapolis wraps up their own post-season destiny and clinches the Northern Conference's 3rd or 4th seed. The Ice move on to face Colorado tomorrow with a 5:00 pm CST face off.
