Giants Travel To Modesto For Three-Game Set

The San Jose Giants begin a three-game series against the Modesto Nuts this evening at John Thurman Field. Matt Lujan (1-0, 5.40) is slated to make the start on the mound for San Jose tonight. The Giants are 7-8 versus the Nuts this season. The clubs last met from June 23-25 at Municipal Stadium with Modesto taking two out of three games in the series.

Last Series

The Giants earned their first series victory of the second half when they won three out of four games against the visiting Visalia Rawhide to conclude the last homestand. Visalia claimed the series opener last Thursday by a 6-2 score before San Jose picked-up victories of 8-3 on Friday, 7-5 on Saturday and 2-1 on Sunday. In the series finale, Joe Kurrasch allowed just one run over the first seven innings to record the win. The Giants finished their homestand with a 4-3 record.

Three Consecutive Wins

San Jose enters tonight's contest having won three games in a row - their longest win streak since posting five consecutive victories from June 1-5. A win this evening would get the Giants (5-6) back to .500 in the second half.

June Review

San Jose concluded June with a 13-11 record - their first winning month of the season (April 11-16, May 15-15). The Giants led the California League with a 3.68 team ERA in June. Top individual pitchers last month included starters Joe Kurrasch (4 G, 3 GS, 3-1, 1.29 ERA) and Kendry Flores (4 GS, 0-1, 2.59 ERA, 36 strikeouts in 24 1/3 innings) along with relievers Bryce Bandilla (0.90 ERA in 11 appearances) and Tyler Mizenko (1.29 ERA, three saves in 13 games). Offensively, San Jose hit .274 as a team in June - their highest monthly batting average this season (April .261, May .246). Top hitters individually in June were Ben Turner (.405, 9 2B, 8 RBI), Blake Miller (.330, HR, 17 RBI) and Chuckie Jones (.323, 4 HR, 23 RBI).

Galindo Matches Team Record

Center fielder Jesus Galindo tied a San Jose Giants single-game record with five hits in Saturday's win over Visalia. He became the 32nd player in the 27-year history of the club to record five hits in a game. Galindo is the second player to accomplish the feat this season joining Mac Williamson, who had five hits against Visalia on April 24.

Strikeout Surge

Giants pitchers have collected a whopping 94 strikeouts over the last eight games (11.8 per game). San Jose is now second in the California League in strikeouts (697) this season. Last year, the Giants led all of Minor League Baseball with 1,282 strikeouts as a pitching staff.

Bednar Joins San Jose From Augusta

The Giants added infielder Brandon Bednar to their roster today from Augusta (A). In 74 games with the GreenJackets this season, Bednar was batting a team-high .275 with nine doubles, one home run, 24 RBI's and eight stolen bases. The versatile infielder has seen action this year at third base (33 games), first base (25 games) and second base (9 games). Bednar also played shortstop last season at Salem-Keizer (Short-Season). Bednar was a seventh round selection of the San Francisco Giants in the 2013 draft out of Florida Gulf Coast University.

Home Cooking Ahead

After this series in Modesto, the Giants will play 14 out of their next 18 games at home. San Jose returns to Municipal Stadium on Friday for a seven-game homestand against the Stockton Ports and Bakersfield Blaze.

Jones Heats Up

Right fielder Chuckie Jones has 11 RBI's in his last six games (.360, 9-for-25, 2 HR). Jones also has multi-hits in three out of his past five games. After hitting .214 in April (1 HR, 8 RBI) and .229 in May (2 HR, 6 RBI), Jones finished June with a .323 batting average (4 HR, 23 RBI, .556 SLG).

Bullpen Standouts

Recent bullpen standouts for the Giants include: Mason McVay (1.14 ERA - 4 ER/31.2 IP - in 19 appearances since the beginning of May), Tyler Mizenko (11 straight scoreless outings - 12 IP), Stephen Johnson (0.92 ERA - 2 ER/19.2 IP - in his last 14 games) and Bryce Bandilla (1.50 ERA - 2 ER/12.0 IP - in 13 games since joining team).

Miller is tops on the Giants in batting average, doubles (19), RBI's and slugging percentage (.476) while he's tied for second on the team in home runs (7).

Opponent Notes: Modesto Nuts
