THE SAN JOSE GIANTS... continue their road trip with the opener of a three-game series against the first-place Visalia Rawhide Tuesday night at Recreation Park. San Jose won two out of three games at Modesto in their most recent series last weekend. After a 9-5 loss on Friday, the Giants bounced back with a 2-1 victory on Saturday before an 8-5 win in the rubber match Sunday afternoon. San Jose enters tonight's game in third place in the first half North Division race with a 19-12 record - three games behind Visalia (22-9) for the top spot.
Marathon Road Trip Continues... San Jose is currently in the midst of a season-long 13-game road trip over a 14-day period. The Giants began the trip on May 5 in Bakersfield and managed two wins during the three-game set against the Blaze. San Jose then traveled to Modesto and took two out of three games in their series versus the Nuts. The Giants enjoyed an off day back in the Bay Area on Monday and now continue their road trip with the current three-game series at Visalia beginning Tuesday before returning to Modesto to play four more games (Friday through Monday). San Jose's next home game is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19 against the Inland Empire 66ers. The Giants are 4-2 thus far on the trip.
San Jose Looking For Third Consecutive Win... A victory on Tuesday would give the Giants their first three-game winning streak since April 18-20 and would also move San Jose a season-high eight games over the .500 mark.
Neal's Hit Streak Reaches 12 Games... Left fielder Thomas Neal brings a 12-game hitting streak into Tuesday's series opener. Neal is batting .432 (19-for-44) during the streak while the 21-year old boasts a .437 average (31-for-71) over his last 20 games. His hitting streak is the longest for any Giants player this season. Neal is currently ninth in the California League in batting average (.356) and fifth in on-base percentage (.455).
Giants Continue Use Of Six-Man Rotation... Despite the recent promotions of Tim Alderson and Madison Bumgarner to Connecticut (AA), the Giants will continue to use a six-man starting rotation. T.J. Brewer made his first start of the season last Saturday and tossed 3 2/3 effective innings (one run allowed) and will continue to see action in the rotation. Brewer started 21 games last season for Augusta (Low-A) and was 10-4 with a 2.95 ERA. Meanwhile, Garrett Broshuis is expected to make his first start of 2009 on Friday night when the Giants return to Modesto. Broshuis, who earned the victory out of the bullpen on Saturday with 4 1/3 scoreless innings, made 81 starts over the last three seasons in Connecticut. Scott Barnes, Clayton Tanner, Craig Clark and Oliver Odle will continue to work in the starting rotation.
Offensive Production Drops In May... The Giants offense enjoyed a tremendous month of April when they hit an outstanding .301 as a team, scored six runs per game and hit 26 home runs en route to a 13-8 record. However, San Jose's offensive production has slipped through 10 games this month as the club is batting .268 while averaging 4.9 runs per contest. The Giants have only hit two home runs this month, although the team still boasts a winning record (6-4). Individually, Conor Gillaspie (.229, 8-for-35), Darren Ford (.207, 6-for-29) and Buster Posey (.143, 5-for-35) have struggled this month.
Prospect Bonanza... According to Baseball America, nine of the top 25 prospects in the San Francisco Giants organization are on San Jose's roster. Catcher Buster Posey (#2), first baseman Angel Villalona (#3), second baseman Nick Noonan (#5), third baseman Conor Gillaspie (#7) and starting pitcher Scott Barnes (#9) all reside in the top 10 while right fielder Roger Kieschnick (#14), starting pitcher Clayton Tanner (#20), left fielder Thomas Neal (#23) and reliever Edwin Quirarte (#25) have also received recognition.
Media Coverage... The entire series from Visalia can be heard live on www.sjgiants.com with Joe Ritzo calling all of the action.
Visalia Rawhide... The Visalia Rawhide, an affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, enter Tuesday's game in first place in the North Division with a 22-9 record - 2 1/2 games ahead of the second-place Modesto Nuts. Visalia is second in the California League with a 3.43 ERA while their pitching staff has allowed the fewest home runs (11). Offensively, the Rawhide are second in the league in runs scored (5.8 per game) despite the third-lowest batting average (.256) and second-fewest home runs (19). Visalia began the year with 10 consecutive wins to tie a California League record for the best start to a season while they're unbeaten against South Division opponents (11-0). Outfielder Ollie Linton leads the Rawhide with a .321 batting average while outfielder Colin Cowgill paces the club with five home runs and 25 RBI's. Right-hander Bryan Shaw is slated to make the start on the mound in the series opener. Shaw, a former second round draft pick of the Diamondbacks, is 1-2 with a 6.10 ERA over six appearances (five starts). This series marks the first meeting of the year between the Giants and Rawhide.
