San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club and City of San Jose have signed a multi-year sponsorship agreement focused on sustainability and green initiatives.
"We're really excited to partner with the City of San José," said Earthquakes President Dave Kaval. "We both share the goal of promoting sustainability, and it's important for local businesses to rally around that purpose as community-based, sustainability-minded organizations."
The Earthquakes along with the City and the County are planning several activities that begin in March and will continue through the 2016 season at the club's new stadium in San Jose, including:
Earthquakes soccer players Clarence Goodson and Steven Lenhart will be featured in a co-branded advertising campaign focused on environmental actions that everyone can take.
An "Environmental Epicenter" at select home games, including opening day and Earth Day, will encourage fans to adopt environmentally friendly actions.
A permanent "Sustainable Stadium Garden" will be installed in the Epicenter Fan Zone of the club's new stadium.
The new stadium facilities will use digital messaging and signage promoting green actions.
"I thank the San Jose Earthquakes and the County of Santa Clara on this partnership to improve recycling, reduce litter, and foster environmentally friendly habits," said Mayor Chuck Reed. "This project is another component of our ongoing efforts to become a zero-waste city and achieve our ambitious Green Vision goals."
"We have a particular interest in helping people who change the oil in their cars understand how to prevent pollution by properly recycling it," said Rob D'Arcy, manager of the County's Recycling and Waste Reduction Division. "The Earthquakes partnership is a fantastic opportunity to share this information with a large number of people."
The Earthquakes have an ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental efforts. The club's new stadium will be LEED Silver-certified by meeting high environmental standards. Ninety percent of the steel used for the superstructure is recycled steel content.
The stadium is also dual-plumbed to use recycled water for toilet flushing; it's designed to conserve energy; and it features an enhanced solid waste collection system. During the demolition of the site, existing concrete was removed and fully recycled.
Since 2008, the Earthquakes have hosted Earth Day celebrations, and more recently, the team established a Sustainability Committee.
