San Diego votes in the ten final names for the newest professional baseball team of the GBL

SAN DIEGO, CA, December 6, 2004 – Have you ever wanted to name your hometown baseball team? The new Golden Baseball League "Name the Team" contest, presented by VONS, received hundreds of votes at the San Diego Hall of Champions during San Diego's 27th Annual December Nights Festival, narrowing your hometown team's name to ten choices.

The votes are in and the ten final names for San Diego's newest professional baseball team are: Jets, Sailors, Sand Sharks, Sluggers, Splinters, Sun Sox, Surf Dawgs, Surfers, Tomcats and Waves. Fans still have time to put their mark on San Diego's newest professional team by going to the leagues website at www.goldenbaseball.com, select San Diego and vote on your top name, the contest will run through December 20th.

The winner of the "Name the Team" contest will be announced in mid January 2005. The winner will receive $500 and team merchandise or a pair of season tickets for the 2005 home season played at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The team encourages all area individuals, schools, social groups, clubs and other area organizations to participate in the name selection.

The San Diego Team is a member of the professional Golden Baseball League which was officially announced on September 9, 2004. The eight-team League will begin play in late May 2005 and conclude in early September 2005.

About the Golden Baseball League

The Golden Baseball League, Presented by Safeway/VONS Inc., is a professional baseball league operating under a single-entity ownership model, with the League owning all the individual teams, with the exception of Los Toros de Tijuana. Charter Golden Baseball League cities include Chico, CA; Fullerton, CA; Long Beach, CA; San Diego, CA; Mesa, AZ; Surprise, AZ; Yuma, AZ; and Tijuana, Mexico. The season will consist of 90 games per team and will begin late May and end in early September. Each team will have a 22-player roster. The Golden Baseball League office is headquartered in Pleasanton, CA.

The league has hired several former Major League All Stars as team Managers including: Mark Parent, Chico; Garry Templeton, Fullerton; Darrell Evans, Long Beach; Terry Kennedy, San Diego; Les Lancaster, Mesa; Ozzie Virgil, Jr., Surprise; Benny Castillo; and Carlos Hernandez, Tijuana, Mexico.
