San Diego Surf News Release
The San Diego Surf Basketball team is hosting an Open Tryout Camp August 15th in La Jolla for professionals and amateurs looking to enter the pro ranks. The Surf finished their 1st season in the American Basketball Association, A.B.A. in April against the Philippine National pro team Smart Gilas.
The Surf will compete again in the Southern California Division with teams from L.A., Compton, Riverside and Las Vegas. After their first intial season, including games in China, the coaching staff of Terry Mason and Ray Johnson are planning to strengthen this season's roster. Home games will be played at the Hour Glass Arena at Miramar College. The ABA, with 67 teams in 10 divisions, begins regular season play early December.
Several Surf players from last season also played professional ball in Europe, Mideast, South America, including Richie Williams from San Diego State who later signed with a team in Iceland. John Clark was named to the Western ABA All-Star Team.
Players are being invited from California and nationwide to test their skills at the Lawrence Family JCC in La Jolla and can register through SDSurfHoops.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
