San Diego Surf News Release
The San Diego Surf opened their 4th season in the ABA with a blowout win against the Orange County Novastars last night! Simply put, they played from beginning to end the way a top-ranked ABA team should play and held nothing back.
Right out the gate, the Surf started the game with a ferocious intensity both defensively and offensively. Their full court press defense and attack-of-the-rim style offense got them out in front early as they ended the first quarter with a 29-15 lead. Surf Guard Aaron Tinsley caught fire early with a few 3 pointers, including one that was made under the 3D Rule, a special ABA 1-point added bonus on a basket after stealing the ball in the opponent's back court. The Novastars struggled to get good looks on the offensive end. However, though the Surf got off to a great start, nobody could have predicted how amazing the second quarter was going to be.
The Surf scored more points in the second quarter than the Novastars scored in the entire first half and one of the players responsible for that was Surf Forward Chris Agnes. Also known as "Mr. Mid-Range", Chris Agnes was untouchable from inside the arc as he scorched the Novastar defense with great shooting. Chris Agnes wasn't the only Surf player on fire, however. Surf Forward Mike Purdie also came alive, as he gave fans a reason to come out their seats a few times with his signature highlight offense. And even though the Surf defense let up a little, they still outscored the Novastars by double to finish the first half with an 80-41 lead.
The game was clearly already won before the second half started, but the Orange County Novastars, a team deemed "on the rise" by the ABA in Pre-Season Power Rankings, continued to play hard and compete from end to end. The Novastars, however, didn't have enough in the tank to mount an almost impossible comeback. The Surf, ranked #8 in ABA Rankings, continued their defense to suffocate Novastar guards in the backcourt, which led to a handful of 3D Lights and a pair of open court dunks by Surf player Alex Petit-Frere. And with the game winding down and the Surf lead in the 30's, it was clear at the end of the game, that the San Diego Surf are a team to watch for this season. Surf players Chris Agnes, Michael Purdie, and Keoni Watson all led the Surf in scoring with 22 points each and Novastar big man, Deon Marcus, led the game in scoring with 24 points of his own. The final score was 140-103 and the San Diego Surf opened their ABA season in stunning fashion.
Surf Head Coach Shaun Manning, who was happy about the fantastic start to the season, also said after the game that "Even though we played great, there were times throughout the game that our focus on defense let up because of how much we were up by, and that will be something we work on going forward into the season." Surf Head Coach Shaun Manning and Coach Mark Smith are still in the process of molding the final roster and with all the players playing great, it makes it that much more difficult for him to make those final cuts.
The Novastars went on to beat the Los Angeles Slam, ranked #6 in the Pre-Season ABA Power Rankings, by two points in OrangeCounty today.
The San Diego Surf's next game will be November 11, 2012 in OrangeCounty against Novastars on their home court. The Surf's next home game will be November 17, 2012 vs. Fresno Flight. All home games are played at MiramarCollege's Hourglass Arena. For more information regarding Surf Basketball and other related news, please visit the Surf's official website @ SurfBasketball.com .
