ABA's San Diego Surf Expand Relations with China

September 7, 2012 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
San Diego Surf News Release

This Summer's practice squad from the ABA's San Diego Surf have made a huge splash in China and its growing basketball community!

On a two-month tour that included 5 of San Diego's own Surf players and 3 other American players, they were placed on a team named the USA Aoshen team to compete against the Beijing Aoshen Olympians and some other Chinese teams. They have won an astonishing, 13 straight games for a 13-0 record so far, with a few more games left to play this month. 6'5'' Surf guard, Dunnell "DJ" Webb, a major contributor to the Surf's success in China, is leading all players on the practice squad in points per game, steals per game, minutes per game, and dunks also. However, he isn't the only Surf player playing well. 7'1'' Surf center, Blake Thompson has also been playing very good as of lately. Blake Thompson and the 3 other American players, two of them listed at 6'9'' and the other one listed at 6'7'', have helped the San Diego Surf's the USA Aoshen go undefeated in the month of August as they look to continue their great success though the end of September on this China tour.

Though the team has had amazing success on the court, San Diego Surf's enthusiastic and entertaining style of play has positively impacted our growing relationship with China and its huge basketball fanbase within the country. The San Diego Surf will also be planning another China Tour this December.

San Diego Surf basketball is growing everyday and with the upcoming ABA season inching closer and closer, the San Diego Surf look to provide a fun, family-oriented environment for all basketball fans in San Diego in winning fashion. The Surf are hosting an open pro tryout this Sunday at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in La Jolla with entrants coming from across the U.S. Head Coach Shaun Manning's intent is to raise the level of talent this season for a definite impact in the ABA, American Basketball Association.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
