San Diego Sockers News Release

Rio Grande Valley visits San Diego after a 6-5 road win over Turlock on Friday night. The playoff-bound Barracudas have improved by 11 wins this season (3-19 last year) and will battle the Monterrey Flash in the first round of the upcoming playoffs. Leading the turnaround is the defense, which has allowed the second fewest goals (89) in the league (SD, 81). Goalkeeper Diego Angel Arriaga is ranked 4th with a 4.20 GAA. Last season, RGV had a league-worst goal differential of -93. In 2018-29, they are at a +49. Pacing the offense are Moises Gonzalez (26-12=38), Efrain Martinez (17-18=35) and Gustavo Rosales (10-21=31).

The Sockers are on a 19-game winning streak and will try to keep the positive momentum going into the postseason. The resurgence of the power play has been important. During the recent four-game road trip, San Diego converted seven straight with the man-advantage. The team is at a season-high 38% power-play conversion rate. The Sockers are 12-for-21 on the power play since Donovan joined the team on 2/15, and 9-for-13 (69%) in power plays Donovan has participated in.

San Diego's magic number to be the #1 overall seed in the MASL Ron Newman Cup Playoffs is one. Any combination of San Diego wins and/or Milwaukee losses totaling one will give the Sockers home-field advantage throughout the postseason. San Diego could host three playoff matches at Pechanga Arena San Diego.
