Carlsbad, CA - The San Diego Sockers open its 2015-2016 Major Arena Soccer League campaign on Saturday, October 24 against new boys Soles de Sonora at the Valley View Casino Center. Kick off is slated for 7:05 P.M. PT.
San Diego begins its quest for a 15th title following a season in which the Sockers fell in heartbreaking fashion, losing 7-6 in overtime of the Pacific Division Final to the Las Vegas Legends. The cupboard has been bare for two seasons now and the club is eager to start the campaign in its bid to reclaim the Ron Newman Cup.
Head Coach Phil Salvagio and company have been hard at work in the off-season making sure to clean up the mistakes which plagued the side last season while bolstering the team both on and off the field.
Former Sockers legend Aaron Susi will come downstairs from the radio booth and join Salvagio on the bench as an assistant coach.
On the field, striker Matt Clare and goal-scoring defender Enrique "Qeeks" Tovar are highly touted additions that will add to the firepower already provided by Kraig Chiles and Nick Parera.
Midfielder Brian Farber is also on his way back to full fitness after just 11 appearances last season.
Soles de Sonora has not only been training in-between the boards, but spent three days training at the beach at Bahia de Kino as well.
Despite being an expansion squad, Sonora will be a tough test for the 14 time champions.
"They got the general manager [Jose Luis] from last year's MASL champions, the Monterrey Flash," Salvagio remarked. "He knows the players, the league and has put together a strong team."
Players such Antonio Garcia Garcia and Reynoso Reyna have joined their GM from last season's champions.
"One thing I know for sure," Salvagio said looking forward to Saturday, "it's going to be a very fast paced game."
It will be double your pleasure, double your fun for the Sockers. After the home opener, the two sides will meet again in Hermosa, Mexico on November 7.
