San Diego Sockers News Release
Carlsbad CA - Kraig Chiles is set to break Juli Veee's record of 254 goals in a San Diego Sockers jersey when the club hosts Atletico Baja on Thursday, December 10 at the Valley View Casino Center.
Chiles tied the mark set by the retired Hungarian born U.S. international with a hat-trick in Saturday's 7-5 come-from-behind victory over the Harrisburg Heat.
Despite holding the record since 1988, watching Chiles' chase for and bid to surpass his mark, has brought Veee nothing but joy.
For Veee, nothing has changed from his playing days. It's still all about the team. "It's good for Kraig, and I think the club will benefit in the long run," said the five-time champion (six including his title in New York) in an exclusive interview with www.sdsockers.com.
When asked what made Chiles such a prolific goalscorer, the three-time MVP said it was a mix of the striker's skill and the players that surround him.
"Number one, as an individual, he is a good player and then he has a supporting cast. Americans sometimes forget that everyone has a supporting cast and without that you ain't going nowhere, and I also had a fantastic supporting cast."
"It shows you the strength of the team and what a great coalition it has," Veee continued. "I think that's reflected in Kraig's [Chiles] game also. He has to be good as an individual player, but then you have the team who is setting you up."
While both players have three MVP's to their name, Veee would not make any further comparisons between himself and Chiles other than the fact that both men were and are surrounded by great players.
"Not a chance," was Veee's reply when he was asked if he saw a bit of himself in Chiles. "He's totally a different player. It's different players [around us]. It's night and day. It's another era and a different time."
Juli Veee will be in attendance when the Sockers face off against Atletico Baja and will partake in the ceremonial first kick with Kraig Chiles before the match.
Kick-off is set for 7:05pm PT. Fans can be a part of history by calling 1-866-799-GOAL.
