OHIO RIVER ROAD TRIP
The San Diego Sockers embark on their most challenging road trip of the season, facing back-to-back games in hostile environments and a clash with the PASL-Pro Eastern Division leaders on the back end. The Sockers first battle the Louisville Lightning on Friday night, a rematch of December 4th's 11-5 San Diego victory in Del Mar. The next night, the Sockers will drive up I-71 along the Ohio River to Cincinnati, where the Kings await for the first-ever meeting between the two franchises. Cincinnati is a perfect 18-0 all-time at home.
LUNA OUT WITH ANKLE SPRAIN
San Diego will be missing a key cog to their midfield during the trip. Chiky Luna was fouled hard in the penultimate play of the Sockers' 6-5 overtime win in Tijuana, suffering a sprained ankle which will keep him joining the team this weekend. Defender Brian O'Connor will travel in Luna's place, with Diego Rovira sliding up into the Sockers' midfield.
BACK TO (NEAR) FULL STRENGTH
While Luna's absence will be felt, the Sockers will return three regulars to their starting 13 this weekend. Midfielders Paul Wright and Majell Aterado and goalkeeper Riley Swift were held out of the Tijuana game for precautionary reasons but all three will make the Louisville/Cincinnati road trip. Wright has 11 points in four games, while Swift is off to the best start of his career with the Sockers with a 4-0 record and 5.25 goals against per game.
OPPONENT PROFILE: Louisville Lightning
THIS YEAR: 1-3
vs. SOCKERS: 0-1 in 2010-2011, 0-2 all-time
Last Meeting: Sockers 11, Lightning 5 (12/4)
This will be San Diego's second appearance at the Mockingbird Valley Sports Complex in Louisville, having defeated the Lightning 11-7 in the US Open championship on April 10th. The Lightning are off to a surprising 0-2 start at home, after fashioning a 7-1 home record in 2009-2010. Since these two teams met on December 4th in Del Mar, the Lightning won their US Open quarterfinal game over an amateur team from Evansville 25-3. Adam Boyer had five goals and two assists for Louisville in the win, although US Open stats do not count toward PASL-Pro official totals.
OPPONENT PROFILE: Cincinnati Kings
THIS YEAR: 5-1
vs. SOCKERS: First meeting
The Kings have a new name (formerly the 1790 Cincinnati Express) and have moved to the historic Cincinnati Gardens, but they are a perfect 18-0 all-time at home in PASL-Pro play. Cincinnati was the league runner-up in 2008-2009 and won the Eastern Division last season. Midfielder Jeff Hughes, the defending league MVP, leads Cincinnati with 11 goals in five games. Forward Eddie Hertzenberg has had a breakout season for the Kings with nine goals and five assists in six games.
