SOCKERS HOMESTAND CONTINUES VS. COUGARS
The San Diego Sockers continue their three-game game homestand with a Saturday contest against the California Cougars. Last season's home dates with the Cougars were two of the most exciting and tense games of the season, as the Sockers emerged with 5-4 and 8-7 wins, both in sudden death overtime.
SOCKERS T-SHIRT NIGHT COURTESY OF SONIC
The first 500 fans through the gates at the Del Mar Arena on Saturday will receive an official Sockers logo T-shirt courtesy of Sonic, America's Drive In. Visit the Sonic drive-ins in Vista or Santee and with any purchase, get a voucher which will allow you to buy 4 tickets to Saturday's game for just $30.
CHILES, SUSI LEAD SOCKERS IN SCORING
San Diego's top two forwards are friendly rivals who are always vying for the top spot on the Sockers' points list. Through two games, Kraig Chiles and Aaron Susi have paced the Sockers' offense, with each collecting three goals and two assists. Chiles' two goal, one assist effort against Tacoma earned him the Sockers' Player of the Week honors for the third week of the season.
FOR THE DEFENSE: ANTONIUK & KRAUSE
The Sockers came into 2010-2011 with a first-team PASL-Pro defender in Dan Antoniuk, and added some extra muscle with the signing of Puerto Rican National Team defender John Krause. The results have been pretty for San Diego, and painful for the competition. In addition to their bruising, physical defense, both players play significant offensive roles. Often playing in the box on power plays, Antoniuk has three goals and an assist through two games, while Krause has a goal and an assist.
OPPONENT'S PROFILE: California Cougars
LAST YEAR: 12-4 (PASL-Pro Wild Card)
vs. SOCKERS: 1-4 all-time, 0-1 in 2010-2011
Last Meeting: Sockers 10, Cougars 6 (11/14)
After winning the PASL-Pro championship in 2008-2009 and qualifying as a wild card last season for the playoffs, the Cougars are off to a stumbling 0-2 start this season. A 10-6 season-opening loss to the Sockers was followed by an 11-7 loss to Revolucion Tijuana, both at the Stockton Arena. On the road for the first time this season, the Cougars are desperate for a victory.
STAR: Craig Scheer, forward
Due to injuries and defections, the Cougars have had to turn to new faces for offensive contributions. Veteran forward Craig Scheer has been the first to step up and fill the scoring void, with two goal games in each of California's first two contests. A physical and opportunistic scorer, Scheer is one the Sockers will need to mark closely on Saturday.
WATCH OUT FOR: Chris Handsor, forward
Handsor joined the Cougars after playing with the Denver Dynamite last year, and has quickly established himself as a physical threat near the penalty box. Standing at over six feet tall and weighing close to 240 pounds, Handsor is able to muscle his way in close to score or pass when he gets the ball as a true holding forward. The Cougars had their best success against the Sockers in the fourth period of their game on November 14th when they ran their offense through Handsor inside the yellow line. Look for Handsor to battle with the Sockers' toughest defenders John Krause and Dan Antoniuk...and don't be surprised if a few elbows are thrown along the way.
