San Diego FC Plays to 1-1 Tie against Minnesota United at Allianz Field

St. Paul, MN - San Diego FC (SDFC) played to a 1-1 tie against Minnesota United FC overcoming an early deficit at Allianz Field. Forward Anders Dreyer converted a penalty kick in the second half to help SDFC (6-7-5, 21 points) to another point in the Western Conference standings.

Minnesota took the early lead after Tómas Chancalay scored with a right-footed shot, capitalizing after Joaquin Pereyra pressed SDFC and stole a ball from just outside the penalty box. SDFC came out looking to equalize in the second half and ultimately earned a penalty kick when Kyle Duncan was whistled for a foul over Alex Mighten right on the penalty box left boundary. Dreyer converted the penalty kick to tie the match 1-1. Forward Marcus Ingvartsen hit the crossbar for a second time in a late SDFC surge, but Minnesota held to secure the tie.

SDFC now shifts its focus to the 2026 Leagues Cup, beginning tournament play against LIGA MX powerhouse Club América on Thursday, Aug. 6, at Estadio Banorte in Mexico City. The Club then returns home to host consecutive Leagues Cup matches against Club Tijuana on Sunday, Aug. 9, and Club Puebla on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at Snapdragon Stadium.

MIN - 1-0 - Tómas Chancalay (Wil Trapp, Joaquin Pereyra) 3rd minute: Chancalay sent in a low-rolling shot just inside the left post off a pass from Trapp after Pereyra stole a ball from the SDFC defense just outside the penalty box.

SD - 1-1 - Anders Dreyer (Penalty Kick)- 64th minute: Dreyer converted a penalty kick with a right-footed shot low and to the right, just inside the right post and the stretched-out arm of Minnesota goalkeeper Drake Callender to tie the match.

Forward Amahl Pellegrino missed a third-consecutive match with a lower body injury.

SDFC HEAD COACH MIKEY VARAS

On Dagur Dan Thórhallsson and Gabriel Pirani and thoughts on the match:

"You can see that Dagur [Thórhallsson] is going to help us a lot in in ball possession. Very clever with the dribble, with passing, receiving under pressure, and also I think he defended well. And then Gabriel [Pirani] got a great instinct for finding spaces and be able to create. He does a great job. He creates a couple big chances for us, which is a great start for him. And then from the team, I think we started a little bit timid. Obviously, we have a big mistake that leads to the goal. Then we get into the game and we start to get a better hold of the game. We create a couple good chances in the first half, defensive pieces really well. Second half, I think we have a much better second half. We put them under a lot of pressure. We end up getting the 1-1. We create a couple huge chances for the 2-1. The most important thing is that we're creating those. Sometimes it hits the pole. Sometimes the keeper makes a save. But I felt like the boys arrived decisively there. Now it's just about taking those chances, and then the only thing I would say is that we need to challenge ourselves just a little bit how we close the game. I think we did an amazing job defending set pieces at the end, like Warriors, but we could have definitely avoided a few of those and maybe ended the game with a little bit more control."

On how he thought his team executed the game plan tonight:

"I think the guys did a good job with the game plan. I think the pressing in the first half was pretty good. We were dominating possession. We were have we were having trouble exploiting the wide areas like we had talked about, and we had just in the first half a little bit of some timidness with the ball and some critical turnovers in the middle of the pitch where we knew the spaces were on the outside. But I think that got corrected in the second half. Overall, it's a game picture we were we could have expected with a lot of set pieces, and I think we did a good job. You know, it's a point away from home in a really tough place, and of course we all want the win. We all feel disappointed because we feel like we created enough for the win, but it's an important point, and it's a good step for the group."

On moving into Leagues Cup and second half of the MLS season:

"Yeah, first is we're going for the tournament to win. As always, we are going to use this as an opportunity also to give some guys some opportunities. Try out some different combinations because we have some new players in. We have some players who haven't gotten the most opportunities. So, it'll be important for every individual who gets their number called to show that they should be a big part of the season moving forward."
