San Antonio Scorpions News Release
San Antonio, TX (May 28, 2014) - The San Antonio Scorpions came back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to beat the game NTX Rayados 4-2 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Scorpions move on to the fourth round where they'll face FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium in Frisco on June 17 at 8pm.
The NTX Rayados shocked the Scorpions with a very early goal in the eleventh minute of the game. The Rayados' Raul Rodriguez served in his third corner kick of the barely begun match and the second ball was knocked to the ground, but not cleared, by the Scorpions defense. After the ball was pinballed around in the box, NTX midfielder Tito Salas pounced on the ball at his feet from 8 yards away and hit a low shot past Scorpions 'keeper Jeremy Vuolo.
Then disaster struck for San Antonio only six minutes later when Albert Rodriguez - who had only come into the game a minute prior for the injured captain Salas - punished Vuolo for straying to the edge of his area by hitting a hard liner of a shot from just shy of midfield and directly into the back of the net.
But the Scorpions turned it all around in the second half when the amateur Rayados seemed to run out of gas. The Scorpions' first goal came on a beautiful diving header served up by midfielder Josue Soto in the 49'. The Scorpions tied it up in the 64' when forward Sainey Touray hit a hard, low shot that Rayados keeper Edward Cortez had no chance to save.
San Antonio then began peppering the Rayados with a constant barrage of chances. They finally broke through for the lead five minutes later as Touray scored his second goal and Soto picked up his second assist of the match. The red and black then erased all doubt when Touray earned a penalty kick for being taken down in the Rayados' box in the 76'. Soto stepped up to the spot and buried his shot low and to the right to make the score 4-2.
The Scorpions next NASL match will be this Saturday in Indianapolis against the expansion Eleven.
San Antonio's next home match at Toyota Field is June 7 against the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers at 7:30pm. Season tickets start at only $10 per game and can be purchased at Toyota Field Box Office or through Ticketmaster.
