San Antonio FC News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - San Antonio FC fell 0-1 to FC Dallas at Toyota Field in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, ending the club's run in the 2018 edition of the tournament.
"You can't fault the players," SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. "Their effort, their desire was evident for everybody the see. They had the willingness to run and do the right things to help the team. With a break here or there we could've gotten an equalizing goal."
SAFC held FC Dallas scoreless in the first half of the match, limiting the side to just one shot on target in the first 45 minutes of play, while outshooting their opponent nine to five and recording three shots on target.
FC Dallas scored the lone goal of the match in the opening play of the second half when forward Tesho Akindele found the end of a through-ball and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Matt Cardone for the 1-0 lead.
SAFC went on to record five more shots and two on target, but were unable to find the back of the net despite a few moments of attacking quality led by midfielder Omar Gordon, including two chances which the visitors managed to clear off the goal line.
The 6,224 attendance marks the highest at Toyota Field during an Open Cup match. SAFC has now reached the fourth round of the competition on two occasions, falling to Houston Dynamo (MLS) at BBVA Compass Stadium in the 2016 edition of the tournament.
San Antonio FC will return to action in USL play on Saturday, June 16 as they host Sacramento Republic FC at Toyota Field.
