SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 28, 2017) - San Antonio FC fell to OKC Energy FC in penalty kicks on Saturday night at Toyota Field in the USL Cup Playoffs Western Conference Semifinal, marking the end of the Alamo City club's 2017 USL season.
"This team has had a tremendous season," SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. "They worked extremely hard day in and day out, and tonight it wasn't meant to be. When it comes down to penalties, the match becomes a lottery, and we didn't win that lottery tonight."
SAFC midfielder Cesar Elizondo opened the scoring in the eighth minute after taking a shot from the top of the box, which was deflected into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. The goal marked Elizondo's second in as many matches and sixth overall in 2017, while the assist marked midfielder Ryan Roushandel's first for the club this season.
OKC Energy FC then equalized in the 85th minute when forward Wojciech Wojcik placed a header past SAFC goalkeeper Diego Restrepo, leveling the score at 1-1. Neither team was able to find the winning goal in extra time, after which the visitors earned the win in a penalty shootout thanks to two saves from C.J. Cochran.
San Antonio FC posted a 17-4-11 record in the USL regular season, and was the best defensive team in the league, finishing with a league-leading 15 clean sheets and the fewest losses across the league. The club reached the Western Conference semifinals in its first postseason appearance in franchise history after defeating Tulsa Roughnecks FC 2-1 in the quarterfinals.
