San Antonio Commanders Daily Training Camp Update for Thursday, January 17, 2019

TODAY'S NEWS

The 2019 San Antonio Commanders held its 12th of 22 Training Camp practices on Thursday at Central Catholic High School's Bob Benson '66 Stadium.

The practice, which concluded the Commanders' second week of training camp, started at 11:30 a.m. and finished shortly after 1:15 p.m. with the players wearing full pads.

The practice session was at full speed with contact, although tackles were not completed to the ground.

For the first time the coaching staff introduced a mock scrimmage situation featuring four drives.

On the first drive, wide receiver Mekale McKay (Cincinnati) made an acrobatic catch over a defender for a 35-yard gain on a pass from quarterback Dustin Vaughan (West Texas A&M). The drive finished with Vaughan finding wide receiver John Diarse (TCU) in the end zone from 22 yards out.

The second drive was highlighted by a 40 yard completion to wide receiver Greg Ward Jr. (Houston) from quarterback Logan Woodside (Toledo).

Quarterback Marquise Williams (North Carolina) showed his running ability on the third drive as he ran a read option for 15 yards on 3rd and three.

Defensive back Duke Thomas (Texas) made the top play of the fourth and final drive as he stepped in front of wide receiver De'Marcus Ayers (Houston) to break up a third-down pass.

In front office news, the Commanders will host an open house event for the general public at the Alamodome on Saturday, January 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The team will hold its 13th training camp practice at the Alamodome during the open house from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Fans are welcome to view the player locker room and enjoy on-field games following practice. Plus, hear about a variety of ticket packages, scope out your seats and get your questions answered about all things San Antonio Commanders.

On Monday, The Alliance of American Football announced the game times for the Commanders' weeks 2-10 games.

The Commanders' full schedule with game times is below:

Week 10 Friday, April 12 at Salt Lake Rice-Eccles Stadium 7 p.m.

The Commanders' roster is at 75 players from 49 different colleges and universities. The University of Houston has the most representation on the roster with five players.

A member of The Alliance of American Football, the San Antonio Commanders have an experienced professional coaching and front office staff led by head coach Mike Riley, general manager Daryl Johnston and team president Vic Gregovits.

The Commanders compete in The Alliance of American Football with the Atlanta Legends, Arizona Hotshots, Birmingham Iron, Memphis Express, Orlando Apollos, Salt Lake Stallions and San Diego Fleet. The Commanders team name draws inspiration from San Antonio's Military City, USA nickname. From Bowie to Travis to the 39,000-plus who graduate each year from military training at Joint Base San Antonio, Commanders have called San Antonio home for more than 300 years.

The Commanders take their first snap on February 9 against the San Diego Fleet with home games being played at the Alamodome. The Commanders team headquarters while in training camp in San Antonio will be the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel San Antonio Downtown. Practices will be held at Central Catholic High School.
