Samuels reaches milestones
May 8, 2007 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Tampa Bay Storm News Release
TAMPA BAY - Lawrence Samuels reached three landmarks Sunday against the Austin Wranglers with his nine-reception, 92-yard effort. The 14-year Arena Football veteran became the ninth receiver in league history to surpass 10,000 career receiving yards (10,042), moved into third place all-time with 847 career receptions and extended his streak of consecutive games with a catch to 112, surpassing Barry Wagner (111) for the fourth longest all-time.
"It is amazing what Lawrence has accomplished in his career," said Storm Head Coach and General Manager Tim Marcum. "Law was never an OS (Offensive Specialist); he was always a two-way player who played with great receivers. For him to put up those numbers playing beside the likes of George LaFrance, Stevie Thomas and Freddie Solomon is truly amazing."
Samuels' best two seasons at receiver have been his two most recent in 2005 and 2006, with 238 receptions for 2,717 yards over that span. Samuels, 37, needs 285 receiving yards this season to move into sixth all-time in receiving yards and is 104 receptions from surpassing Eddie Brown (950) and 144 from tying Barry Wagner (991) on the AFL career reception leader list.
Samuels' excellence is demonstrated in his overall ability to play the Arena game. He currently is first all-time with 33 career fumble recoveries, fourth all-time with 19 forced fumbles, tied for 17th all-time with 426 tackles and 22nd all-time with 27 interceptions. He also has the fourth longest streak of consecutive games with a reception in league history at 112 games, two ahead of Colorado Crush receiver Damien Harrell (sixth all-time) and two behind Darryl Hammond (third all-time).
The 2007 Storm season, presented by Champs Sports, Where Sports Lives, returns to the St. Pete Times Forum Friday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. as the Tampa Bay Storm take on the Arizona Rattlers. For Storm ticket information call 813.301.6780 or visit www.tampabaystorm.com.
