Round Rock Express News Release
SALT LAKE CITY - Gary Majewski walked Nate Sutton with the bases loaded, scoring Mark Trumbo with the winning run as the Salt Lake Bees scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth for a 5-4 victory over the Round Rock Express in Friday night's series finale at Spring Mobile Park. The Express (15-20) failed in the attempt at their first series sweep of the season and fell to 0-9 in series finales. Round Rock still won the series, taking three of four against the Bees (16-19).
Salt Lake staved off two-out, two-strike pitches twice to snap a five-game losing streak. The ninth started with a Robb Quinlan single, and Cory Aldridge followed with a walk. After a Bobby Wilson sacrifice pushed the runners to second and third, Hank Conger delivered a sacrifice fly to cut Round Rock's lead to 4-3. Majewski then intentionally walked pinch hitter Mark Trumbo but then issued a full-count walk to Hainley Statia, who was hitting .167 on the season, to load the bases.
Peter Bourjos bounced a 1-1 Majewski offering over the mound for an infield single, scoring Aldridge and moving the winning run to third. Sutton fell behind 1-2 before working the count full; after fouling off one full-count pitch, he watched the seventh pitch of the at bat sail high. Trumbo trotted home with the winning run as the Express bullpen suffered its 10th blown save of the season.
It was the first loss in 15 games this season when leading after eight innings for the Express, who lost for only the second time in their last seven games. It was Round Rock's seventh loss this season in the opponent's final at bat.
Majewski (2-2) took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits and four walks in the ninth. It erased a strong relief outing by Jonah Bayliss, who worked around a leadoff single in a scoreless seventh before striking out the side in the eighth. Starter Josh Banks allowed two runs on five hits and no walks with four strikeouts over 6.0 innings; however, he was not in line for the win.
Jeremy Hill (1-0) picked up the win for the Bees, escaping a walk and a hit unscathed in the ninth with one strikeout. Salt Lake starter Marco Albano worked 6.0 innings and surrendered two runs on six hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
Round Rock held the lead on two different occasions but could not sustain the advantage either time. Brian Bogusevic snapped a scoreless tie in the third with a one-out RBI single. After Chris Shelton walked, Chris Johnson delivered a sacrifice fly to give the Express a 2-0 lead.
Salt Lake tied the game in the fourth on Wilson's two-run homer to left field on a full-count pitch. The Express recaptured the lead with two runs on three hits in the eighth. Shelton doubled to open the frame and later scored on Jason Castro's one-out single. Matt Kata followed with an RBI double to right. However, Round Rock missed a chance to tack on an insurance run in the ninth as Johnson struck out with runners at first and second to end the inning.
Kata finished 3-for-4, posting his team-leading sixth three-hit game of the season. Bogusevic and Oswaldo Navarro added two hits each. Quinlan and Wilson both had three-hit games for the Bees; the former scored twice, and the latter had two RBI.
Round Rock continues its third road trip of the season Saturday, opening a four-game series at Colorado Springs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CDT. Southpaw Polin Trinidad (1-1, 3.19 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express. Right-hander Chaz Roe (1-5, 6.37), whose Friday start was bumped due to a rainout, will start for the Sky Sox (18-16).
