SALT LAKE CITY (December 17, 2008) - The Salt Lake Bees, Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, will begin the franchise's 16th season of play against the Reno Aces (formerly the Tucson Sidewinders) on April 9 at 6:35 p.m. at Franklin Covey Field. The eight-game home stand, four contests against the Aces followed by four games against the Las Vegas 51s, opens the 2009 Pacific Coast League season for the three-time defending Pacific North Division Champion Bees. The team will play 144 games (72 home, 72 away) in 153 days, all of which can be heard live on ESPN 1230 AM from the "voice of the Bees", Steve Klauke.
The Angels top farm club, under the helm of two-year manager Bobby Mitchell, will face off against conference foe and 2009 PCL and Triple-A Champion Sacramento River Cats for a four-game home stand beginning June 2 and then close the regular season against the Cats September 4-7.
The 2009 season marks the club's ninth year of affiliation with the Angels, in which Salt Lake has a 599-550 record, four division championships, and one trip to the PCL Finals. Salt Lake last opened at home on April 5, 2007, defeating Las Vegas 4-3, and the Bees own a 9-6 all-time record in home openers.
The Bees welcomed 500,780 fans to Franklin Covey Field in 2008, the most the club has seen since the 2000 season. Minor League Baseball also set another attendance record with 43,263,740 fans visiting ballparks across the country last season.
Salt Lake will host division rivals Tacoma Rainiers, Colorado Springs Sky Sox, and Portland Beavers and Pacific South Division opponents Sacramento River Cats, Las Vegas 51s, Fresno Grizzlies and Reno Aces for eight games each. The Bees will also host American North Division teams Iowa Cubs, Memphis Redbirds, Omaha Royals and Nashville Sounds for four games each.
Salt Lake will travel to all four American South Division teams for four games each against the Oklahoma City Redhawks, New Orleans Zephyrs, Albuquerque Isotopes, and Round Rock Express.
Last season, the Bees began the year with a Minor League Baseball best 21-1 record, finishing the year at 84-60 (.583) while capturing the 2008 Pacific North Division Championship. The 84 wins were the most since the 2000 season when the franchise finished 90-53 (.629), losing in the PCL Finals. The Bees lost in the first round of the 2008 PCL Playoffs to the eventual PCL and Triple-A Champion Sacramento River Cats.
