Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Long Beach, CA - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, started their 12-day road trip with a bang in unleashing on the Long Beach Ice Dogs in the third period of their fifth matchup of the season. Wes Goldie and Kiel McLeod both tallied a four-point game as Victoria won 6-4.
The Goldie brothers ran a clinic for special teams in the opening half of the first period. Long Beach's Ash Goldie notched a shorthanded goal beating Goaltender Julien Ellis from the right circle and giving the Ice Dogs a 1-0 lead at 4:28 into the first.
James DeMone fed Victoria's Wes Goldie in a 5-on-3 powerplay and the veteran wristed the puck past Netminder Brett Jaeger to tie the game 1-1. On the following 5-on-4 powerplay advantage, Wes Goldie popped in his 18th goal of the season as a Mike Stutzel pass led him to the yawning cage.
Long Beach evened the score 2-2 at 7:47 into the second frame. Defenseman David Walker snuck in from the left point during an Ice Dogs powerplay and found the pocket past a screened Ellis. Six minutes later, Darryl Lloyd has hauled down en route to the Long Beach net and was credited with the first Salmon Kings penalty shot opportunity of the season. Lloyd steered straight at Jaeger and scored down low to give Victoria a 3-2 lead.
Long Beach came back before the close of the second to gain the lead. Kip Brennan dropped the puck to Terry Harrison, who tallied his third goal of the season with 3:08 remaining and tied the game 3-3. Under one minute later, Long Beach stole the puck at the Salmon Kings blueline and Donald Johnson was on a mission to the net and scored a backhanded goal top shelf to give the Ice Dogs a leg up.
The back and forth action did not cease in the final period, but Victoria was the only team to score. At 8:11 into the third, Wes Goldie came off the left side boards and danced to the crease to earn the Salmon Kings second hat trick of the season, and even the score at 4-4. Rookie Defenseman Matt Kelly corralled his third goal in three games, while pinching in on the faceoff in a Salmon Kings powerplay and lifting the puck backhand from the right wing.
Kiel McLeod sealed the Victoria victory with a shorthanded goal. Wes Goldie spotted McLeod across the red line and led him to the net for the breakaway marker-his 13th goal of the season.
Final: 6-4 Salmon Kings
Ellis earned his tenth win of the season, and Jaeger suffered his 11th loss. Victoria scored three times on seven powerplay chances and Long Beach was 1 for 8 with the man advantage. The Ice Dogs outshot the Salmon Kings 35-29. Victoria (12-18-0-1) travel to Fresno for a game on Friday night versus the Falcons (19-9-1-0) at the Save Mart Center at 7:30 p.m.
