Salmon Kings Sign Mike Burgoyne
August 27, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that they have signed defenseman Mike Burgoyne.
The 6-2, 200lb blueliner spent last year in the EIHL with the Belfast Giants. In 71 games for the Giants he scored 58 points (17g-41a) and added 72 minutes in penalties, while helping the franchise win its first ever Challenge Cup.
"Mike is an offensively gifted defenseman who has led his team in scoring on two occasions," General Manager and Head Coach Mark Morrison said, "He also plays with a toughness that will make him valuable on the backend."
Prior to playing overseas, Burgoyne spent two seasons with the Oklahoma City Blazers of the CHL where he put up his best offensive numbers. In 128 games with Oklahoma City he notched 116 points (38g-78a) while tallying 164 penalty minutes. In both seasons with the Blazers, he led the team in assists and points and was named a CHL All-Star.
The Hamilton, ON native also spent three seasons in the UHL with the Quad City Mallards, Motor City Mechanics, and Rockford IceHogs. His most productive season in the UHL was his final year with Motor City where he scored 14 goals and added 24 assists for 38 points with 67 penalty minutes. In the three total years played in the UHL, Burgoyne dressed for 129 games and scored 52 points (19g-33a) with 117 minutes in penalties.
For his professional career, Burgoyne has played in 328 games scoring 74 goals and 152 assists for 226 points and 353 minutes in penalties. The defender is not considered a veteran by ECHL standards as only 257 of his games qualify towards that total.
Before turning pro, the 28-year-old defenseman spent two seasons with the Brantford Blast in the Ontario Hockey Association Senior A League (OHASr). In that time Burgoyne tallied 62 points (20g-42a) in just 57 games played while accruing 46 minutes in penalties.
