
Salmon Kings Sign D-Man Waddell

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that they have signed defenseman Matt Waddell.
The native of Nanaimo, BC will begin his third season of professional hockey this fall, and returns to North America after playing the 2008-09 season with Boras HC of the Swedish second tier league Allsvenskan. In 44 games playing in Boras, Waddell scored 9 points (3g-6a) and added 78 minutes in penalties.
"Matt can play effectively in both ends of the ice and is a very good skater," General Manager and Head Coach Mark Morrison said. "He is a proven defender and should continue to be effective for our team."
Prior to playing overseas, Waddell started his professional career in 2007-08, splitting time between the Charlotte Checkers (ECHL) and Hartford Wolfpack (AHL). The blueliner played 60 games in Charlotte scoring 4 goals and 14 assists for 18 points and added 89 penalty minutes. In the 2008 Kelly Cup Playoffs, he played in three contests with Charlotte where he accrued four minutes in penalties. He also participated in 12 games with Hartford registering 12 penalty minutes.
The 25-year-old spent four seasons (2003-07) at Ohio State University before turning professional. His most productive season came in his senior season as a Buckeye when he scored 17 points (5g-12a) in 37 games, while notching 48 minutes in penalties. During his four year career at Ohio State Waddell played in 157 contests scoring 59 points (17g-42a) and added 236 minutes in penalties.
The 6-1, 205lb Waddell played two seasons with the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL in 2001-02 and 2002-03. In his final season as a Viper, the blueliner tallied six goals and added 29 assists for 35 points with 114 penalty minutes.
