Salmon Kings Add Wilson to Blue Line

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that they have signed defenseman Michael Wilson for the 2010-11 season.

The 23-year-old defender is coming off a 2009-10 campaign that saw him participate in 54 games with the Worcester Sharks of the American Hockey League (AHL). In those contests he registered 15 points (5g-10a) to go along with 42 minutes in penalties. Wilson also dressed for eight of the Sharks' Calder Cup Playoff games this past spring notching one assist and four penalty minutes.

"Mike is very talented offensively and is also strong in his own zone," General Manager and Head Coach Mark Morrison said. "He is an AHL caliber player that we see as a top four defenseman for us."

The North Vancouver, BC native split the 2008-09 campaign between the Sharks and the ECHL's Phoenix Roadrunners. The majority of his season was spent in Worcester where he accumulated one goal and four assists for five points in 31 games played while serving 14 penalty minutes. He also competed in 27 games with the Roadrunners scoring 14 points (4g-10a) while tallying 14 minutes in penalties, garnering him ECHL All-Star honors. Wilson also participated in the San Jose Sharks' Rookie Development Camp prior to the 2008-09 season.

For his professional career, Wilson has amassed 10 goals and 24 assists for 34 points in 112 contests, while recording 80 penalty minutes.

The 6-1, 160 lb. Wilson split a five-year junior career between the British Columbia Hockey League's (BCHL) Langley Thunder and Western Hockey League's (WHL) Swift Current Broncos. In 99 games over two seasons in Langley (2003-04 and 2004-05), the defenseman accumulated five goals and 24 assists for 29 points with 90 minutes in penalties. Wilson then moved to the WHL where he spent three season (2005-06 though 2007-08) in Swift Current. During his time as a Bronco he recorded 97 points (19g-78a) and 111 minutes in penalties in 169 games played.

The Salmon Kings kick-off the 2010-11 season with two exhibition contests versus the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday, October 9th and Sunday, October 10th.
