The Atlanta Thrashers have assigned defenseman ANSSI SALMELA (AN-see sahl-MEHL-ah) to the Chicago Wolves.

SALMELA was acquired by the Thrashers from the New Jersey Devils, in exchange for defenseman Niclas Havelid and left wing Myles Stoesz, on Monday. The 24-year-old blueliner has appeared in 17 National Hockey League games with New Jersey this season, recording three assists and six penalty minutes. He also tallied eight goals, 16 assists and 24 points in 38 American Hockey League outings with the Lowell Devils during his North American debut this year.

The Nokia, Finland, native, recorded 36 goals, 41 assists and 77 points in 208 career SM-liiga (Finland) games, spanning five season with Tampere Tappara (2003-06, 2007-08) and Lahti Pelicans (2005-07), prior to signing with New Jersey as a free agent on May 30, 2008.

SALMELA also represented Finland in international competition at the 2004 World Junior Championships and 2008 World Championships.

He will be available to make his Wolves debut when the team visits Carver Arena to take on the Peoria Rivermen on Friday at 7 p.m.
