Wichita Wingnuts News Release

LINCOLN, Neb - After a rain delay of two hours and 28 minutes, the Wichita Wingnuts eked past the Lincoln Saltdogs 5-4 Thursday night at Haymarket Park behind a go-ahead two run homer by Brennen Salgado in the fifth inning.

Trailing 4-3 entering the fourth, Harrison Kain picked up a single with one out for Wichita (44-25), bringing up Salgado who was already 2-for-2 on the night. The rookie smashed a Matt Shepherd (3-7) offering over the wall in right for his first professional home run, giving the Wingnuts a 5-4 lead they did not relinquish.

After allowing a run in each of the first four innings to the Saltdogs (39-30), Tim Brown settled in for Wichita, retiring the side in order in the fifth and sixth frames, and setting down the final eight he faced. For the night, the veteran righty allowed four runs, three earned, over six frames to turn in his fourth consecutive quality start.

Behind Brown, the Wichita bullpen picked up where he left off, as the trio of Chad Nading, Seth Harvey, and Frankie Reed each spun a scoreless frame of relief, with Reed working the ninth to collect his 13th save.

After Lincoln struck first in the bottom of the first, the Wingnuts leveled the score with a run in the second. Kain reached on an error to start the frame, then came around on the first of Salgado's three hits, an RBI double, to make it 1-1.

The Saltdogs went back in front with one in the second and another in the third, but Wichita once again pegged them back in the fourth. Leo Vargas brought in his 30th run of the season with a sacrifice fly, and Zack Cox then tied the game at three apiece with a run-scoring single.

Lincoln, however, went right back in front in the home half, as Robby Kuzdale nudged the home team back in front with an RBI double.

The Wingnuts and Saltdogs continue their four-game series Friday night at Haymarket Park. First pitch is set for 6:35, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
