SALEM, VA -- The Salem Avalanche Opening Day roster for the 2006 season has been announced. Salem will have 13 players back from the 2005 season which saw the Avalanche finish with an overall record of 67-74.

Returnees from 2005 include pitchers Jimmy Barthmaier, Rodrigo Escobar, Troy Patton, Rory Shortell, and Robert Stiehl from a staff that posted a 3.77 ERA in 2005. Catcher Jeff Mackor, infielders Mario Garza, Edwin Maysonet, Scott Robinson, Wade Robinson, and Drew Sutton, and outfielders Ervin Alcantara and Francisco Caraballo also return to Salem to begin the 2006 campaign. Alcantara, who led the Avalanche in games played (130) in 2005 will patrol centerfield for the Avalanche.

The Avalanche pitching staff will be bolstered by newcomers Ben Diggins, Evan Englebrook, Ronnie Martinez, Felipe Paulino, Chad Reineke, and Ryan Thompson. Diggins will become the 176th player in Salem history to play in the major leagues as he started five games for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2002. Lou Santangelo, who played at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium with Clemson University in the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, joins the Avalanche roster as a catcher. Infielders Billy Hart and Neil Sellers and outfielders Matt Cunningham and Wallace Torbert have made the jump to Salem.

Avalanche Strength Coach Josh Cuffe will rejoin the Avalanche field staff for a second season.

The Avalanche open the 2006 season on Thursday, April 6th versus the Potomac Nationals at 7:07 PM. Opening Night features Fireworks presented by Smirnoff Ice, along with a Magnet Schedule Giveaway to the first 1,000 through the gate, courtesy of Tribles.
