San Angelo Saints News Release
SAN ANGELO â The San Angelo Saints today are excited to announce the signing of goaltender Brant Nicklin to a contract for the 2003-2004 season. He joins last year's starter Scott Reid on the Saints' goalie corps for the upcoming season.
A native of Comox, British Columbia, Nicklin began his pro career is 2000 after finishing up his college playing days at the University of Minnesota Duluth. In 106 professional games he is 58-35-7 including a 15-3-0 record for Oklahoma City in 2000-01, which garnered him CHL Goaltender of the Year honors for that season. In 2001-02 Nicklin posted an 18-7-0 record for the Quad City Mallards of the UHL and helped lead them all the way to the final round of the playoffs. His 2.45 goals-against average was 5th in the UHL that season. Last season he put up outstanding numbers on a bad team in Rockford of the UHL. His 21-20-5 record was a bit misleading as he also ranked 1st in Shoot-Out Wins (9), 2nd in Shut-outs (4), 8th in Wins (21) and 9th in Goals-Against (3.31). His quality play also earned him a call-up to the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals last season.
"Brant is an outstanding goaltender and a quality person," said Saints head coach Ray Edwards. "This gives us two quality goalies and with Brant having much-needed playoff experience, I look for them to push each other to make us successful."
"I'm looking forward to coming to a team that is going to work hard and play tough defensively every night," said Nicklin. "I'm impressed with Ray's team philosophy and I'm going to work hard to help get the Saints back to being winners."
At 6-0, 190 pounds, Nicklin is another big goalie to go along with Reid, who stands at 6-3, 200 pounds.
"I play kind of a hybrid style," said Nicklin. "I'm not in there to win a fashion or style contest. Every style is good if you stop the puck and I'm just in there to win games."
"I'm coming to the Saints to work with Scott and help our team win games," added Nicklin. "Whoever is in there is going to have to be the backbone of what should be an improved defense."
Nicklin is married to Kelly Nicklin and they have a 3-year old daughter, Reese. They are expected to arrive in San Angelo toward the end of September.
The Saints now have 16 players signed for the upcoming season that begins with preseason games October 10th (home) and 11th (away) against Odessa. The Saints' home opener is Oct. 18th against Rio Grande Valley. Season tickets and multi-game ticket and voucher packs remain available at the Saints office, 3111 Knickerbocker Road, and at the San Angelo Convention Center.
