Rayz Acquire Brown from Amarillo

September 2, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

Corpus Christi, Texas: September 2, 2003 - The Corpus Christi Rayz have acquired defenseman Matt Brown in a trade with the Amarillo Gorillas, Rayz General Manager/Senior Vice President Pat Dunn announced today. Brown comes to Corpus Christi for his second season in the Central Hockey League. Last season with Amarillo, Brown played in 62 of the team's 64 games. That kind of durability is exactly what the Rayz are looking for after repeated injuries plagued them a year ago.

Brown, 24, is a stay at home defenseman who plays a very physical brand of hockey. He plays a lot bigger than his 5'11", 201lb. frame, and last season racked up 75 penalty minutes for the Gorillas. Brown is not known for his scoring, tallying zero goals and only two assists last year in Amarillo. His contributions to the team are his durability and versatility. When the team's offense requires size, Brown has been known to use his physical style to play up front and in the corners.

"Matt is a guy that gives us depth, and adds strength to our team," said Rayz Head Coach, Al Sims.

In exchange for Brown, the Rayz sent a player to be named later to Amarillo. At the conclusion of the 2003-04 season, the Rayz will have to protect ten players from their final game roster. Amarillo will pick one of the remaining eight players from the Rayz roster to complete their part of the trade. Players on the injured reserved list are automatically protected.

A native of Hingham, MA, Brown was well liked in Amarillo because of his strong community involvement and friendly demeanor with the fans. Prior to his time with Amarillo last season, he spent part of three years playing at the Northeastern University.

The Corpus Christi Rayz drop the puck on the 2003-04 Central Hockey League season on October 16, when they host the New Mexico Scorpions. Season tickets and group packages are currently available.
