Saints Re-Sign St. Olaf Grad Schmiesing, Ink Catcher Larson

ST. PAUL, MN (March 29, 2010) - There will definitely be some local flavor on this season's St. Paul Saints club as they re-signed St. Olaf grad, outfielder Andrew Schmiesing. The team also signed free agent catcher Zach Larson.

The 23-year-old Schmiesing spent all of last season with the Saints and hit.248 with 20 RBI in 72 games. In 254 at bats he roped six doubles, a league leading seven triples while stealing nine bases in 12 attempts. He finished with a.327 slugging percentage and a.346 on base percentage.

In 2007 Schmiesing was an 11th round pick by the Minnesota Twins out of St. Olaf College. He spent the '07 season with the Gulf Coast Twins where he hit.321 with 13 RBI in 35 games. The following year he spent the first week of the season at Rookie level Elizabethton before being called up to Single-A Beloit.

During his senior season with the Oles Schmiesing was an ABCA/Rawlings Second Team All-American, D3baseball.com Second Team All-American and was named to the MIAC Playoffs All-Tournament Team.

The 23-year-old Larson spent the last two seasons in the Chicago White Sox organization. Last season he split time between Single-A Kannapolis and the Rookie League team in Great Falls. He hit.235 with five RBI in 19 games with Kannapolis and.177 with six RBI in 24 games with Great Falls.

The Saints have signed 13 players during the offseason, six pitchers and seven position players. Clubs may carry a maximum of 27 players into spring training and must have the roster pared down to 23 for the first 14 days of the season. After those 14 days the roster must be down to 22 players.

The Saints 2010 season begins on May 13 with a six game home stand, three with the Wichita Wingnuts and three with the Lincoln Saltdogs.
