USHL Dubuque Fighting Saints

Saints Head East to Battle NTDP

December 17, 2020 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

The Dubuque Fighting Saints will stay on the road, after a tough loss on Tuesday night to the Green Bay Gamblers. The Saints are still trying to find their footing during the 2020-21 season, and they will draw a tough matchup against the USA NTDP U-18's. The two teams will clash for a two-game series in Plymouth on Friday and Saturday this weekend. Get set for the series:

-Dubuque has played well in spurts this season, but a failure to string together a full 60 minutes continues to be costly for the group. The Saints outplayed the Green Bay Gamblers for 40 of 60 minutes on Tuesday, but Green Bay's goaltending kept them ahead until the offense caught up in the third.

-A few things that Dubuque will have to lean on heading into the week are the power play and Connor Kurth. The power play has recorded at least a goal in four of the Saints last five games. They have pushed their season percentage to 17.6%.

-Kurth has been tremendous for Dubuque in his rookie season, recording 10 points in his first 10 games. He leads the team in points and assists and is tied for the team lead in goals. Kurth has four points over his last two games and has scored his first two goals since his Opening Night hat trick.

-Dubuque's defense will need to step up to the challenge of the NTDP. Though they have not played the U-18's yet, historically that is a team who can skate and score better than anyone in the league. Dubuque has allowed five goals or more in seven of their 10 games.

-The U-18's haven't played much in the USHL and neither have the U-17's. In fact, Team USA as a whole has just five games in league play. Coming into this week, the U-18 group was 0-2 this season, with two losses to the Chicago Steel.

-Dylan Duke leads the U-18 group with 16 points in 13 games. The games played include all inside and outside of the USHL this season. Sasha Pastujov has a team-high eight goals in just 10 games played for the program.

-Outside of Connor Kurth, Dubuque's three main offensive sources have been PJ Fletcher, Daniyal Dzhaniyev and Stephen Halliday. All three have eight points with Dzhaniyev scoring five goals, Halliday three and Fletcher two.

-Dubuque hasn't won much in Plymouth, only doing so once since the 2014-15 season. The sample size is fairly small, with just seven games in that time.

-After this weekend, Dubuque will face their busiest week of the season. They will play five games in eight days.
