Saints Get One Hit in 7-1 Loss to Goldeyes

WINNIPEG, MB - Perhaps this is the first piece of adversity the St. Paul Saints have faced in an otherwise incredible season. For the first time in at least 10 years the Saints managed just one hit, an RBI double by Aaron Gretz in the fifth, and lost for the third straight game, 7-1 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Tuesday night at Shaw Park. The loss dropped the Saints to 40-19 and the Goldeyes cut the lead in the division to 7.5 games.

Edwin Carl, who had given up nine runs in 2.2 innings in his only other start against the Saints this season, retired the first 10 Saints he faced. Carl walked Tanner Vavra with one out in the fourth, but struck out Angelo Songco looking and got Alonzo Harris to ground out to end the inning. Harris finished 0-3 and had his career high hitting streak come to an end at 15 games.

In the fifth with the Saints trailing 6-0, Willie Argo drew a one out walk and Tony Caldwell walked with two outs. Gretz took a 1-1 pitch and looped a fly ball double into left-center scoring Argo to make it 6-1. It was the only hit of the night for the Saints.

In the sixth Harris reached on a two out walk, but Tony Thomas lined out to right to end the inning.

In the seventh Trever Adams walked with one out and Caldwell followed with a fly out to left. Carl left the game for Kyle Anderson who got Gretz to fly out to left to end the inning. Carl went 6.2 innings allowing one run on one hit while walking five and striking out three.

Anderson pitched a perfect eighth, with Vavra coming closest to a second hit when he smashed a line drive to the right of first baseman Jacob Rogers who lunged to make the catch.

Brandon Shimo came on in the ninth to retire the side in order.

The Goldeyes offense scored an unearned run in the first when Eric Veglahn hit leadoff batter Adam Heisler. He stole second and, with two outs, moved to third on an infield single by Reggie Abercrombie. Willie Cabrera hit a ground ball to third, but Adams couldn't field it cleanly and Heisler scored on the error to make it 1-0.

With the Goldeyes up 2-0 in the fourth Casio Grider led off with a walk and Carlton Tanabe walked with one out. Heisler doubled over the head of Brady Burzynski in right scoring Grider to make it 3-0. A sacrifice fly by Gonzalez made it 4-0 and the Goldeyes got an RBI double and an RBI single by David Rohm and Abercrombie, respectively, to make it 6-0. Veglahn went 4.0+ innings allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits while walking three and striking out two.

The bullpen pitched well with Gene Escat throwing 2.0 scoreless and Benji Waite tossing a scoreless inning. Outfielder Breland Almadova threw a perfect ninth inning.

The same two teams will meet in the finale of the three game series on Wednesday night at Shaw Park at 7:00 p.m. The Saints send RHP Mark Hamburger (10-0, 2.75) to the mound against Goldeyes RHP Duke Von Schamann (5-4, 3.86). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
