THE GAME
This Week 6 battle of 1-3 teams marks the end of the season for both the Sacramento Mountain Lions and the Omaha Nighthawks. These teams played at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento in Week 3 and the Nighthawks won 33-30. Omaha kicker JEFF WOLFERT drilled a 39-yard field goal to win the game as time expired. He also converted 56- and 54-yard field goals earlier in the game. It was the first professional victory for Omaha head coach JOE MOGLIA . . . Sacramento is coming off its first win of the season as the Mountain Lions beat the visiting Virginia Destroyers (3-1), 27-20, in overtime on Oct. 15 . . . Sacramento rookie quarterback MCLEOD BETHEL-THOMPSON received his first professional start and he responded by throwing two touchdown passes to receiver OTIS AMEY and completing 25-of-46 passes for 260 yards and one interception. Bethel-Thompson was named the UFL's Offensive Player of the Week and he completed passes to 11 teammates in the win . . . Sacramento's AARON WOODS was named the UFL's Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts last week. Woods returned three kickoffs for 97 yards (32.3 average) in the win and returned two punts for 21 yards (10.5 average) . . . Sacramento scores 20 points per game and gives up an average of 26. Omaha averages 15.5 points and gives up 24 . . . Sacramento and Omaha split two games last year, each team winning at home. Each team had a veteran starting quarterback last year, DAUNTE CULPEPPER for the Mountain Lions and JEFF GARCIA for the Nighthawks.
MOUNTAIN LIONS ADD THREE NEW PLAYERS
There will be three new players in uniform tonight for the Mountain Lions. Defensive lineman JOHN FALETOESE, receiver JAYSON BOYD and defensive back ZACHARY SCHRADER each were with the team in training camp this season. Faletoese, from Jesuit High and UC Davis, played with the Mountain Lions in 2010 (six tackles). He has spent time with two NFL organizations - the Buffalo Bills and the Denver Broncos. Schrader is a rookie out of Sacramento State. He was Second-Team All Conference (Big Sky) as both a junior and a senior at safety. Boyd spent some off-season time with the Oakland Raiders after his college career ended in 2006. His father JEFF BOYD, also a receiver, is in the Canadian Football League Hall of Fame (69 touchdowns for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers). Boyd was signed by the team in Week 4 for the game at Virginia and he is being brought back to the team for this final game of the season. The Mountain Lions placed three players on injured reserve (running back ANDRE DIXON, fullback CHARLES ALI and long snapper AARON KING) and cut defensive lineman JOSH SAVAGE after beating Virginia last week.
MOUNTAIN LIONS CORY ROSS CLOSING IN ON 1,000 UFL RUSHING YARDS
Sacramento Mountain Lions star running back CORY ROSS, in his third year playing for coach DENNIS GREEN in the UFL, is the league's second all-time leading rusher with 946 yards. He has a chance to become the first player to rush for 1,000 career yards if he can gain 54 on the ground against Omaha. Virginia's DOMINIC RHODES, playing at the same time tonight in the UFL Championship Game against visiting Las Vegas, enters play today with 961 career yards on the ground. Ross rushed for 45 yards in the season-opening loss to Las Vegas and sat out Sacramento's next two games with a hamstring injury. He returned to action last week against visiting Virginia and finished with four rushing yards on eight carries. Rhodes rushed for 41 yards on 18 carries in the same game, one week after ripping off 217 yards on 18 carries against the Mountain Lions . . . Ross, the UFL's Offensive Player of the Year in 2010, also is at the top of the UFL's charts in career receptions with 78. Ross played in four regular-season games for the NFL's Baltimore Ravens in 2006 and got into another six games in 2007. As a member of the Ravens, Ross injured his ankle in the final preseason game of 2008 and took an injury settlement . . . Rhodes played seven seasons for the Colts (2001-06, 2008, 2010), and one for the Oakland Raiders (2007), rushing for 3,286 and 26 touchdowns on 814 carries. He also caught 147 passes for 1,025 yards and four touchdowns. Another 2010 Mountain Lion, linebacker/ defensive end CURTIS YOUNG, won a Super Bowl ring with the Green Bay Packers last year as a member of the practice squad.
MOUNTAIN LIONS HEAD COACH DENNIS GREEN
Sacramento head coach DENNIS GREEN was a head coach in the NFL for 13 seasons (Minnesota and Arizona) and this is his third year as a UFL head coach.
