Sacramento hosts WTT Championship Weekend
August 16, 2005 - World TeamTennis (WTT)
Sacramento Capitals News Release
World TeamTennis' best will face off next month for the King Trophy at the WTT Finals presented by Advanta, Sept. 16-17, at Allstate Stadium at Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights, Sacramento, California.
The Eastern Conference Champion New York Sportimes (9-5) take on the Boston Lobsters (7-7) on Friday, Sept. 16, at 3 p.m. PST. The Sportimes bring their grit and determination to what will be a rematch of their season-ending loss to the Lobsters 22-20 in Mamaroneck. The Lobsters are looking to put an exclamation point on an amazing return to World TeamTennis with a championship. One of the League's original teams in 1974, the Lobsters last fielded a WTT team in 1978 before returning this season with a lineup that includes the legendary Martina Navratilova and Coach Anne Smith. Ironically, Smith and Navratilova were doubles partners on the 1978 Lobsters lineup.
The Western Conference Champion Sacramento Capitals, with a league-best 11-3 record, host their rivals, the Newport Beach Breakers (9-5) in the second semifinal at 7 p.m. PST. The Capitals bring with them a WTT record five championships as they host the defending champion Breakers. Newport Beach and Sacramento split their four regular season head-to-head matches, 2-2.
Winners from the two semifinal matches will battle at 3 p.m. PST on Saturday, Sept. 17, for the WTT Championship. The WTT Finals will be taped and will air Sept. 22 at 11 p.m. (EST) on ESPN2. Lineups for the four teams will be finalized in the next few weeks.
WTT Championship Weekend ticket packages for both the semifinals and finals are currently on sale. Packages range from $99 to $199. Individual tickets for the semifinals and finals matches, priced from $49.50 to $99.50, will go on sale August 15. Tickets are available at www.gocaps.net or e-mail tickets@gocaps.net or call 916-638-4001.
