Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release

HIDALGO, TX: August 4, 2005 - The Rio Grande Valley Dorados upgraded their line in preparation of their first round playoff contest Sunday against the Quad City Steamwheelers with the addition of lineman Jerry Turner, who was assigned to the club by the arenafootball2. The Dorados also activated lineman Antoine Murphy, moved defensive specialist Norman Mason from the short term to the long term injured reserve list and placed Darvell Bivens on re-assignment.

Turner looks to accomplish something he was not able to do earlier this season with the National Indoor Football League's Odessa Roughnecks, and that is win a championship. The 27 year-old native of Birmingham, Alabama was on the Roughnecks squad that went 14-0 in the regular season and then lost out to the eventual champion Tri-City Fever 41-39 in the conference finals on July 23rd. With Odessa, Turner ranked tied for second in the league with a team high 12 sacks in 11 games played (NIFL Statistics are missing two Odessa games worth of statistics) in the regular season, and also ranked tied for second in the postseason with 2.5 sacks in three games. Sacks were nothing new to the 6'2 265-pound Turner, who ranked ninth in the af2 heading into this season in career sacks with 21.5. Turner played three seasons (2001-2002, 2004) with his hometown Birmingham Steeldogs in the af2 and last season he co-led the league in sacks with 8.5. His Steeldogs totals included 60.5 tackles (43 solo) on defense and 3 touchdowns on offense off 3 receptions in 40 games played. Turner spent the 2003 season in the Arena Football League, appearing in seven games with the Las Vegas Gladiators, where he registered four tackles. Prior to turning pro, Turner was a four-year letterman and was a two-time Second Team All-Ohio Valley Conference member at Tennessee Tech, where he left ranking second all-time in total sacks for the Golden Eagles.

Murphy returns to the Dorados lineup after missing the previous two games due to injury. In 13 games this season, the Baylor product has 4.5 tackles (2 solo) and 1.5 sacks. Any additional information on Turner, along with interview requests for Turner or Dorados Head Coach Kevin Guy can be made by contacting Chris Due at 956-843-5656.

The Dorados return to action this Sunday night, as they host the Quad City Steamwheelers at Chase Field inside the Dodge Arena to open the National Conference Playoffs. Individual tickets for the game are already on sale. Additional info can also be found by visiting the Dorados online at www.doradosfootball.com.
