Wilmington Sea Dawgs News Release
Wilmington, NC- There was no southern hospitality displayed Saturday night as the Sea Dawgs had their best game of the season, blasting their visitors from Birmingham 111-75.
After a closing the first quarter 26-22, the Dawgs went on to outscore the Sabers 85-53 en route to their largest victory margin of the season. Donielle Davis led the team in scoring with 22 points and 7 rebounds.
The Sea Dawgs had another high scoring second quarter for the second game in a row. After holding a 4 point lead after one quarter, Wilmington went on a 19-2 run. Midway through the period Joe King hit a 3 pointer to put the lead at 47-24.
The Sea Dawg defense stifled Birmingham the entire game, only allowing 10 points in the second quarter, and forcing 24 game turnovers, something Coach Kuhl was proud of his team for.
"I thought our defense played great tonight. I told our guys to win every 4 minutes, and to keep playing hard on the defensive end and they responded very well," Kuhl stated.
Crowd favorite Kadiri Richards had a great defensive game grabbing 16 rebounds and smashing 5 block shots. For Kadiri, defense comes first.
"I love getting blocked shots, defending the paint. That's my area. I always want to play strong defense and do what I can to help my team win," said Richards.
Birmingham did not give up however, cutting the one time 31 point lead to 16 halfway through the third quarter. However, after free throws by Donielle Davis and Zach Hermann, and a putback slam by Richards, the lead was back at 23.
The 75 points allowed was the lowest point total of the season. Wilmington now moves to 4-1 on the season. Their next home game is Friday, May 21 at 7:05 against the Georgia Gwizzlies.
