San Jose SaberCats News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Feb. 13, 2007) - The Arena Football League will make an appearance at the Stockton (Calif.) Arena on Thursday, February 15, when the San Jose SaberCats and Grand Rapids Rampage conduct a preseason scrimmage beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The teams will conduct the scrimmage under traditional Arena Football League rules with slight variations. Four 14-minute quarters will be played and steps will be taken to protect the quarterbacks from both teams.

"This will be the first opportunity to get a look at our squad in a game-type setting with the new league rules," said SaberCats' head coach and general manager Darren Arbet. "We have a lot of new faces and we need the chance to evaluate everybody."

A Stockton native, Arbet is looking forward to the homecoming. "I'm excited about bringing the SaberCats to my hometown," he said. "I was born and raised here so this truly is a homecoming for me."

A two-time AFL Coach of the Year, Arbet is entering his ninth season as San Jose's head coach and is one of the winningest mentors all-time. He enters the 2007 season with 93 career victories, the fifth-most in AFL history. Arbet is a graduate of Edison High School in Stockton and was inducted into that city's Black Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.

Located approximately 75 miles east of San Jose, Stockton is home to the arenafootball2 Lightning, who ranked third in the league in attendance with an average of 7,445 fans per home game during their inaugural 2006 season.

"The Stockton Lightning are very excited to host the San Jose SaberCats and top level arena football in the Stockton Arena," said Lightning team president Dan Chapman. "The SaberCats are one of the premier franchises in the AFL and with Coach Darren Arbet being a native Stocktonian, this is a perfect fit for them to play in our facility."

General admission tickets are on sale for $5 at the Stockton Arena ticket office, and available for purchase online through www.stocktontickets.com.
