SaberCats sign Rasmussen, release Battle

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Jan. 5, 2007) - The San Jose SaberCats signed former Kansas City Brigade lineman KYLE RASMUSSEN to a free agent contract and released veteran ALBREY BATTLE, the two-time ArenaBowl champions announced the moves today.

A defensive lineman during his collegiate career at Michigan State, Rasmussen (6-4, 297) played in 14 games with the Brigade as an Arena Football League rookie last season, including six starts on the offensive line at center.

The 25-year-old native of Hadley, Mich. began his indoor football career in 2005 playing under current SaberCats' defensive coordinator Kevin Guy with the Rio Grande Valley Dorados of the arenafootball2 league. While with the Hidalgo, Texas-based franchise, Rasmussen was teammates with current SaberCat players Marquis Floyd and Julius Gant.

A four-year letterman and three-year starter with the Spartans, Rasmussen was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and helped lead his team to three bowl games in his four years. He ended his career with 150 tackles, seven tackles for loss and three sacks.

The SaberCats also released veteran lineman Albrey Battle, whose 91 regular season games played with the franchise are the most of any lineman and the third-most in team history. Battle joined the team in 2000 and was a member of both ArenaBowl championship teams.

The SaberCats open training camp for their 13th AFL season on February 2 and will begin the season in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 4. San Jose will play its home opener on Saturday, March 31 against the Tampa Bay Storm.
