Published on January 5, 2007 under Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
NEW YORK - As part of its sponsorship of the U.S. Army High School All-American Game, the Arena Football League has named MARC TYLER of Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, CA the 2006 AFL High School Ironman of the Year. AFL Commissioner DAVID BAKER will present the award during the U.S. Army All-American Awards banquet being held Friday evening, January 5.
The AFL High School Ironman of the Year is given annually to the top two-way high school player in the nation. Tyler, the son of former UCLA and NFL running back Wendell Tyler, was a standout running back while playing linebacker on defense.
Tyler (6-1, 220) saved one of his best performances for a large stage when he lead Oaks Christian's 59-13 victory over St. Bonaventure (Ventura, Calif.) in a nationally televised showdown in September.
Tyler rushed for 271 yards and five touchdowns. His scores were from 1, 5, 13, 25 and 73 yards. In that game he became the 12th player in California history to score more than 100 career touchdowns.
Tyler has verbally committed to play at the University of Southern California under the tutelage of Pete Carroll. He will miss this year's U.S. All-American Bowl game due to a season-ending leg injury he suffered late in the season.
The seventh annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl will be played on Saturday, January 6, at the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX.
