SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 8, 2004) - The defending ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats made their first free agent signing of the offseason inking former Stanford University defensive back RYAN FERNANDEZ to a two-year deal, General Manager Terry Malley announced.
Fernandez (5-11, 180) joined the SaberCats last season signing to the club's practice squad in May. The Richmond native also spent time with the Canadian Football League's Calgary Stampeders and the NFL's San Francisco 49ers.
"Ryan will be a tremendous addition to our team," said SaberCats head coach Darren Arbet. "He spent time on the practice roster last season and has developed into a solid two-way player."
A four-year letterwinner with the Cardinal, Fernandez started 22 of the last 23 games at cornerback from 2000-01 and tallied five career interceptions. He made the transition from receiver to defensive back following his freshman year.
