San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (April 9, 2002) â Former San Francisco 49er and nine-year National Football League veteran James Williams today agreed to contract terms with the two-time defending Western Division champion San Jose SaberCats, announced General Manager Terry Malley.
Williams (6-2, 247, Mississippi State) played in 31 of 32 regular season games and all four playoff contests as a reserve fullback and special teams player with the 49ers in 1997 and 1998. The Cleveland Browns selected him off the San Francisco roster in the 1999 NFL Expansion Draft.
He is expected to play when San Jose visits the Georgia Force on April 12 in the final preseason game.
Originally a 6th round draft pick (158th overall) of New Orleans in the 1990 NFL Draft, Williams played five seasons with the Saints before being selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 1995 NFL Expansion Draft.
During his nine-year NFL career, Williams played in 137 games making 284 tackles. He earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors with New Orleans after scoring his first NFL touchdown on a 33-yard interception return against the New York Giants on October 2, 1994.
To make room on the 30-man training camp roster, the SaberCats waived former Stanford Cardinal Frank Primus. Primus was battling rookies Clevan Thomas and Wendell Davis and last year's part-time starter Anthony Cobbs for a defensive specialist position.
The SaberCats open their eighth season in the Arena Football League when they host Western Division rival Arizona Rattlers on Saturday, April 12 in Compaq Center at San Jose. Tickets are still available and can be purchased through all Northern California TicketMaster outlets and the Compaq Center at San Jose ticket office.
