San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Nov. 13, 2006) - The stock in specialized players has escalated since the Arena Football League's substitution rule change, which is why the San Jose SaberCats have strengthened their defensive line with the signing of free agent CHRIS SOLOMONA, the team announced today.
Solomona (6-5, 287) played the final two years (2003-04) of his collegiate career at the University of Oregon. After being redshirted in 2002, Solomona appeared in 23 games at defensive end for the Ducks where he chalked up 63 tackles, seven sacks and two interceptions.
"Chris is a very speedy lineman coming off the block," stated head coach Darren Arbet. "His athletic package of size, speed and quickness should provide immediate assistance to our team."
Solomona signed with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted college free agent in April of 2005 and played during the preseason before being waived in late August. He prepped at San Pedro (Calif.) High School and then initiated his college career at El Camino Junior College in Torrance, Calif. Solomona was touted as the No. 6 overall Junior College prospect by JCFootball.com and earned JC first-team All-American honors with the Warriors in 2001.
The SaberCats also created three roster openings by releasing lineman Sam Hernandez, defensive specialist Tremain Mack and receiver/defensive back Charles Pauley.
"Tremain, C.P., and Sam were all integral parts in the success of this franchise," said Arbet. "We appreciate everything those guys have done for the SaberCats and wish them all the best."
Hernandez, who is the AFL's all-time sack leader, hasn't played since the 2005 season but is considered one of the all-time great linemen in the league. Pauley is a former San Jose State Spartan and was on the SaberCats roster when the team won the ArenaBowl in 2004. Mack played for the Cincinnati Bengals for four years before heading to the AFL in 2005.
A premier franchise in the AFL, San Jose has captured two ArenaBowl titles, six Western Division championships, seven consecutive playoff appearances and owns the league's best regular season record this decade. Season tickets for the SaberCats 13th season in the AFL, which begins next February, are available now by calling (408) 573-5577 or by visiting the team's official website - www.sanjosesabercats.com.
