San Jose SaberCats News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Nov. 4, 2003) – Former San Jose State University star Charles Pauley today signed a two-year contract to play with the Arena Football League's San Jose SaberCats, announced General Manager Terry Malley.

Pauley (5-10, 165) led all NCAA Division 1-A players with a 31.5 kickoff return average in 2002 and returned two for scores. He also caught 60 passes for 804 yards to become just the 11th player in school history with at least 100 career receptions. A two-year starter for the Spartans, Pauley led the squad last season by compiling 2,086 all-purpose yards and holds the school game record with 355.

A two-time Western Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week in 2002 and a first-team all-conference selection as a receiver, Pauley's electrifying returns earned him All-America recognition as well. As a kickoff return specialist Pauley was named to the first team by FootballNews.com and tabbed a third team performer by Associated Press.

Named co-winner of the Alan B. Simpkins "Most Valuable Player" Award at the 2002 San Jose State University football banquet, Pauley was also one of five finalists for the 2002 Mosi Tatupu Special Teams Award, which was created to honor college football's best special teams players.

Signed by the Oakland Raiders as an undrafted free agent in April, Pauley attended training camp with the National Football League club.

The San Jose Sports Hall of Fame will honor Pauley as its male Amateur Athlete of the Year on November 21.

The SaberCats open their 10th season in the Arena Football League in February. Season and group tickets for the 2004 season are available by contacting a sales representative at (408) 573-5577. Individual game tickets are set to go on sale in mid December and can be purchased through any Northern California TicketMaster outlet or the HP Pavilion box office.
